In an effort to enhance the safety and preparedness of students, the Uganda Fire Brigade conducted an educational session at Luzira Secondary School on Monday. The event aimed to equip learners with essential knowledge and skills to handle fire outbreaks effectively, ensuring the safety of both individuals and property.The session was initiated by the headmaster, Ssenyimba Peter Hormisdas, who emphasized the importance of fire safety in schools. He highlighted the recent increase in fire incidents in educational institutions across the country, stressing the need for students and staff to be well-prepared to respond to such emergencies.The team from the Uganda Fire Brigade, led by Chief Fire Officer John Mukasa, commenced the training with a comprehensive presentation on the causes of fire outbreaks. The students learned about various sources of fire, including electrical faults, unattended cooking appliances, and improper storage of flammable materials. Chief Mukasa emphasized the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to prevent fires.Following the presentation, the fire brigade conducted a live demonstration on how to use fire extinguishers. Students eagerly participated, learning the PASS technique—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep—to effectively combat small fires. The hands-on experience was invaluable, as many students had never used a fire extinguisher before.In addition to practical training, the fire brigade also provided valuable tips on creating and executing fire evacuation plans. Students were taught how to identify emergency exits, the importance of staying low to avoid smoke inhalation, and the significance of conducting regular fire drills. The session underscored the importance of remaining calm and composed during a fire outbreak, as panic can exacerbate the situation.The event concluded with a Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to ask the fire brigade team various questions about fire safety.
